April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month
NHTSA’s U Drive. U Text. U Pay. campaign
According to NHTSA research, texting is considered the most dangerous type of distracted driving because it combines visual, manual, and cognitive distraction. Our driving becomes distracted when we look at our phone, when we reach for our phone and when we read the message.
Statistically, drivers between the ages of 16 to 24 are recorded as having been distracted by mobile devices at a higher rate than other age group. Please be safe and focused while driving. Don’t text and drive. If you have a passenger in the car, assign them as the “designated texter”. Resist the temptation to look at your phone, be proactive in keeping it from distracting your driving by placing it in the backseat or trunk.
Texting while driving is illegal everywhere in Texas. Don’t text and drive
What does “Distracted Driving” mean?
Distracted driving is any activity that takes your attention away from driving. This includes a driver who is texting or talking to someone in the vehicle, eating and drinking, adjusting the stereo or navigation system — basically, anything that takes their attention away from the task of safe driving.
If your attention is on something other than safely driving your vehicle to its destination, you are not practicing safe driving. It would take approximately 6 seconds to travel the length of a football field at the rate of only 35 mph.
Distracted Driving Accidents
TxDOT’s Talk. Text. Crash. campaign
In 2019, the total number of crashes on Texas Roads were 561,582. Of those crashes, 97,853 involved distracted driving which resulted in 378 deaths and 2,500 serious injuries. Many lives were impacted by the negligence of a distracted driver.
TxDOT public awareness campaigns and initiatives educate Texans about the dangers of talking and texting while driving with the overall goal of making our roadways safer for everyone and saving lives.
